The history of the Panama Specialty Coffee Association begins in 1996, during the international crisis of low coffee prices. At a time of economic danger, a visionary group of 7 coffee farmers from the Boquete and Volcán areas saw an opportunity in adversity. Thus the association was born, with the objective of competing in quality, an approach that has led them to export their coffees worldwide, gaining global recognition for their quality.
In the fertile and productive region of Chiriquí, specifically in Boquete and Volcán, is the land of coffee par excellence. Boquete, with a centuries-old tradition in coffee growing, is known as the oldest coffee district in Panama and the birthplace of one of the most appreciated coffees in the world.
Carmen Estate, located in the Chiriquí Volcano Valley, 1,800 meters above sea level, is an outstanding example of this coffee tradition. Founded in 1960 by Efraín and Carmen Franceschi, today it is directed by their grandson, Carlos Aguilera. With over 50 years of experience, Carmen Estate consistently produces 1,200 bags of high-quality green coffee each harvest.
Carmen Estate's coffee trees grow on steep hills, surrounded by ancient rainforest, natural springs and streams that cross the property, providing an ideal habitat for local wildlife. The farm is committed to sustainable practices, from integrated pest management to soil conservation and protection of water resources.
During harvest, ripe, red cherries are rushed to the pulper, the skin, pulp and mucilage are removed from the kernel, and the residue is recycled as organic fertilizer instead of being released into the environment. The parchment-bearing beans are dried in the sun and breeze in concrete patios, and then completed by parchment-fed mechanical dryers.
Carmen Estate not only produces high-quality coffee, but also embraces social and environmental responsibility, ensuring safe conditions for workers and contributing to the sustainable management of the environment. Each cup of Carmen Estate coffee not only tells the story of its rich coffee tradition, but also the commitment to quality and sustainability at every stage of the process.
